Biased News: Fair & Balanced

We looked at Interest Groups and Media this week, but we didn't get much of a chance to actually view each. For this week, lets look at both ends of the spectrum:

1. watch Fox News, preferably O'Reilly Factor or Sean Hannity. What were the topics discussed and cite incidents of bias? None of these shows available? Look at their websites and do the same.

2. watch MSNBC and watch Obermann or Rachel Maddow. What were the topics discussed and cite incidents of bias? also see the websites if none are available.

Due to the nature of the assignment, we'll go until Tuesday midnight to give you a chance to see all the shows. Still want more? Listen to Rush!

    1. I watched the O’Reilly Factor, FOX NEWS VS. THE WHITE HOUSE. The main subject that they talked about was how the Liberal media stuck u for FOX News. O’Reilly talked about how the treasury department tried to prevent FOX News from interviewing the executive pay czar. ABC, CNN, CBS, and NBC all refused the interview as well unless FOX was included. He also described how this was a huge embarrassment for the White House. I believe this short segment was bias toward the White House and how this is making Obama look bad. A statement that O’Reilly made was that, “The American media supported FOX News, standing up for the freedom of the press.”

    2.The 2nd video was with Obermann. He wasn’t as biased as O’Reilly was but was still leaning toward favoring public option. Obermann talked about how Olivia Snowe was the only republican who voted against public option, saying public option would give the government too much control over the health care industry. Obermann then presented percentages which were favoring public option over a bipartisan bill 54 to 38%.

    1. http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2009/10/12/mike-baker-peoples-weekly-brief-obama-nobel-prize/
    Mike Baker made an article on Obama winning the Nobel Prize. Saying that "You no longer have to do what you promised to do to win the award." & "Everyone gets an trophy!" He claimed that we are coming to the end of the old world order where awards are given out. based on actual acts and feats committed by man. This is bias towards republicans. He is claiming that Obama hasn't done anything worthwhile and doesn't deserve the award. Without really citing anything other than opinion. That makes this bias.

    2. http://www.msnbc-msn.com/id/32363493/ns/msnbc_tv-countdown_with_keith_olbermann/
    Olbermann says that Palin was dangerously irresponsible. Palin claimed that people will have to stand in front of Obama's "Death Panel" and be judged on their level of productivity in society which will determine whether or not they receive healthcare. She stated that that kind of system is downright evil. Olbermann stated that's why that type of system will never exist under Obama's presidency and then he stated that SHE was downright evil. I think the bias came from Palin. She is obviously over-exaggerating and trying to harm the healthcare proposal. Which is more bias against democrats. Of course Olbermann was then slightly bias claiming that Palin was downright evil.

    1. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/10/25/industry-groups-decry-obama-administration-calling-campaign/. This article talks about the White Houses critism for the people critizing them. It speaks about how the White House doesn't have the right to tell news companies to only print positive things. You can tell that this article is biased because it just talks about how the white house is critizing them and not what they said about the white house first.

    2. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33469426/ns/politics-more_politics/ This article was written about the proposed pipeline plan given by former governer of Alaska Sarah Palin. It talks about how the pipeline deal was never going to happen and that even if Palin was in power it couldn't be done. This is biased because all it really does is bash Palin, a repulican, and how her plan work out.

    @ Katelyn
    I agree with you that the liberals are not as biased as the conservatives.

    @ Drew
    Your right about him not using an another opinion making that comment biased.

    1) I read an article from the Fox News Website talking about The Clock Ticking on Afghanistan Troop Decision. The article basically said that many republicans are starting to argue with President Obama on his decision to take his time on deciding how to handle the situation. Meanwhile troops are still dying, which the article states is primarily due to lack of reinforcements. The article also said how many more Senators are joining against Obama’s decision. The bias in this article was definitely in the fact that it did not present the side of President Obama and those who agree with him, it only presented the side of those against his decision (mainly republicans).

    2) I went to MSNBC’s website and found an article by Jonathan Alter on the first year of President Obama’s administration and what he has done. This article basically went over what Obama has done but in reality he hasn’t accomplished a whole heck of a lot. This is where the bias comes in, the article claims Obama has done all these things in his first year and basically glorifies him.

    1. I watched one video on Fox News and the bias on the topic was incredible. They took something that Obama said and completely turned it around and used it against him. They only want to show the people of America one part of Obama's speech where he is "bashing" the US Commerce. They do not show the rest of the conference where he says that commerce in America may be at its finest in 10 years.

    2. I also read the article on MSNBC by John Atler about Obama's first year. It is true that MSNBC is extremely biased toward the democratic side. He really hasn't done much, but what he has done, MSNBC has turned it into a huge Obama love-fest and glorified him in every way possible.

    @ josh
    i totally agree with you obviously since i read almost the same things as you, but you make some great statements.

    @ katelyn
    does anybody like bill o'reilly????? Anyone? ok didnt think so.

  7. Abby Eldredge pd 1
    So I thought this particular news was pretty cool. It was a topic from both stations combined. Its was O'reilly and Olbermann and talking about how they both bash each other too much. They compete at 5pm everyday. The fox network website was very biased to O'reilly giving statistics on how his viewing percentages have gone up since august by 7%. They pretty much are saying how O'reilly is the best which they would do since he is part of their network... they go on to say how Olbermann personally bashes his oppent where as O'reilly is attacking the network as a whole so its not as bad.

    On MSNBC there was an article with Olbermann. It is talking about how the government are scared of voting bills through because there is only one republican so they feel republicans won't like the fact because it could be too democratic. It is almost as if they are accusing the government of being scared of democrats which is biased since they are democratic so they are trying to expose the government.

    @scott I totally agree with the biased opinions you found in each network they are clearly for a side

    @ hoover... wow I never really knew that news networks were so biased to specific parties but now that you have made us aware of it I can cleary see it in action

    1. News vs. the White House. The issue was that an interview was to be done but Fox News was excluded because of its conservative structure. Turns out that the liberal media and its stations stood up for Fox News saying if Fox wasn’t allowed for the interview none of the other stations would use the interview. I think that there was a little bit of bias attitude towards Obama when the idea was stated that Fox has control of the cable news. It has a large amount, but I don’t think as much as their boosting about.
    2. The issue was that some dude named Ailes might run for president because of his affiliation with Fox News. The hosts and guests were extremely one-sided with rude comments about this man. Saying, pretty much, how he is a joke in the political world. They were bashing his republican ties left and right. They even made fun of him because he is fat. Its messed up.
    @Josh
    I defiantly agree with you and your views towards Olberman. He is too quick to bash the republicans for my taste.
    @Drew
    I agree with your statement about Palin. She seems to be very bias towards other involved in her own goals.

    1. I watched Sean Hannity. He talked about the white house’s “war” on fox. He questioned whether the government can help the people thought regulation and programs that get in the way of Capitalism. On the subject of health care, they portrayed the public as being against it. The shortage of swine flue vaccine was addressed. A very wide range of issues were addressed and discussed in depth. Fox’s bias was conservative.

    2. I watched the Countdown with Olbermann. They mostly talked about the Healthcare bill and the public option saying that the public was for it. Their bias was clear. They people they interviewed all favored the public option. They also talked about the split in the Republican Party and Limbaugh’s accusations of Obama being communist, using a false college paper that supposedly belonged to Obama. Very few topics and issues were discussed and Fox news was constantly being bashed with accusations of lying all the time. Their bias was liberal.

    @ Katelyn
    I hardly agree that Olbermann is less biased than O’Reilly. They both are equally biased; it just comes through more clearly sometimes than others.

    @Josh
    Both articles you read clearly presented their biases. The second does beg the question, what has Obama accomplished exactly. I do wonder how long the article was…

    To begin with Fox News there was an article from before the election that had to deal with the chairman Roger Ailes. The man was quoted on making fun of our now President Obama. Not so much making fun actually, but poking holes at his name as well as the backgrounds of him. This being the fact that he was a democrat and recently a bunch of democrats had been dropping out of any events that were hosted by the suspected/acused Fox news.

    I found that I as well as Josh and Scott started writing about the same article. Therefore, I'll try to make this less of a repeat. An artcile on the MSNBC's website by John Alter was talking about President Obama's first year. It is very clear to see that there is a bias, favoring he democrats. Not to say that Obama has not done THAT much but in all honesty...has he? That's the question that makes this next part interesting. John Alters article was about how absolutely wonderful/amazing the Presidents first year has been. When in reality it is not anywhere near as wonderful nor commendable as they make it out to be..

    1. I watched talking points on the O'Reilly factor and it had to do with a speech that Dick Cheney gave on wednesday concerning his disapproval with the Obama administration. O'Reilly basically agreed with everything cheney said, saying he was completely correct and the Obama admistration sucks.

    2. I watched the countdown with Obermann and the one topic he covered was public opinion included with the health care bill, and it was made clear that public opinion was a go for democrats, and then showed clips of other republicans NOT agreeing with it.

    1.) I read an article on Hannity's on our economy. Basically he bashed Obama. He was saying that Obama didn't want to be held accountable for his mistakes. Hannity was discussing all the negativities of Obama's health care and any other plan of reform made by Obama.

    2.) I watched a Keith Olbermann video on the msnbc website and it involved the health care bill. I'm assuming it's the same video that Jenny watched. He wasn't nearly as biased as Hannity. He did emphasize the fact that public option was moving the bill in the right direction and talked positively of the health care bill, such as saying that it will be helpful in the future. Olberman also praised the president and said that it was great that he's sticking with his idea

    1. well.. i watched sean hannity and he was extremely conservative and biased. He was asking obama questions about obamas policies and that were pretty much putting obama down.

    I watched a video on Fox News where the bias was definitely present. Fox News took a quote from one of Obama's speeches and used it against him in an unfair argument. Fox just kept hating on obama. They only showed one part of his speech where he mentioned something being risky, but never showed the rest of the speech where he said it may be risky but it's helping us out in the long run.

    2. I watched Keith Olbermann discuss the health care bill. He didnt seem to be as bias as i thought him to be. He stated that the bill was moving along nicely and he said that obama was doing a good job at keeping it moving

  15. 1.)I watched O'Reilly Factor on the Fox News site, he talked a lot about how people are all about the attack on Fox. He simply stated how Obama had spoke against the Fox Network.

    2.) I watched Rachel Maddow she spoke about the Health Care Reform. And about the public option in the bill.

    I decided to watch a video from the O’Reilly Factor and The Countdown with Keith Obermann both concerning the War on Fox. I found them both rather boring actually.
    Obermann was basically just saying that whatever Fox said was completely wrong. He also brought on a political analyst that said basically that the people who work for fox news are idiots. Some of the names Obermann called fox were rather funny. He also stated that Fox news was not only wrong but malevolent in the way they report on situations.
    O’Reilly attacked a Times reporter for an article he published. They go on to call Fox the most powerful news network or right up there with all other networks. The go on to say that Fox is the best network ever and so forth.
    I don’t really like either person. They like to attack each other and I wouldn’t really call them news anchors. They seem to be nothing more than entertainment for people who are politically liberal or conservative. Growing up both of my parents watch at least one speech from each candidate and they watch all of the debates. My Dad is a Republican and my Mom is a Democrat so I hear both sides of the ticket. So to reiterate, as a moderate I just believe that both sides have credible points and should be able to make them. To get the truth it seems you have to listen to both sides and try to make an explanation somewhere in the middle.

  17. Posting from my bunk:

    I happened to be watching Faux News with my dad (it's just too easy to make fun of) and I love how they make out like everyone in the world is out to get them. Like they're the lone crusader (the other networks are NOT terribly biased, people). Remember their annual "War on Christmas?" Seriously, people.

    On the other side of the playing field, I tried to tolerate a bit of Olbermann's... I suppose I should call it a "program," though he sounded more like an angsty Livejournaler whining about Dubyah.

    At least they both have shows dedicated exclusively to Missing White Girls (Greta Van Susteren and Nancy Grace).

    I'm reading articles for this, since watching news programs summons my dad and results in him screaming obscenities. Not fun.

    1. I read an article on the Fox News website about the recent deaths in Afganistan and how October has been the most violent month. It's not as biased as Fox News usually is (it's mostly rushed war talk), but I think the tone of the article is biased because instead of making it sound like "Oh, the war is terrible and young people are dying!" is sounds more like "Those d*mn terrorists! We need to get them good!", which pretty much defines 'conservative bias'. I think I would have seen more bias if I watched it though, since some things like that are more apparent with voice infliction (and just based on past experiences with Fox News... they don't hide bias very well verbally.).

    2. I picked an article about the public support for the war in Afganistan for the MSNBC article. I think the bias was easier to see here (!!!) because it was defending the president from the public's sudden change in opinion. They blamed the public wanting to make a new political party before getting used to the current one because they can't bare to think that the government thinks differently now, which is kind of a nice, newsy way to say "We're in charge now, suck it up.".

    I watched this video of O'Reilly complaining about a Time magazine columnist calling Fox News ridiculous. O'Reilly goes on to explain how the reporter is wrong and that even some liberals frown upon the White House's decision to bash Fox. What I found most amusing about the segment was that the entire time O'Reilly was talking his words would be paraphrased next to him under a column called "Truth Police." Truth police? Really?

    I watched Keith Obermann talk a bit about health care. I really don't think Obermann or Maddow are good representatives of liberal news. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, albeit they're not official news people or anything, seem to be much more popular and have enough news for the average person.

    @ Jamie
    I think it's pretty tough to say how Obama's first year has gone. It takes time to see how new policies turn out.

    @ Nathan
    I don't think the truth is necessarily in the middle. The "truth" in and of itself is at times completely subjective.

    1. I watched a video online with hannity talking about the war in afghanastan and the war on fox. It was of course biased. He linked the two together reffering to the war on fox news as a distraction from the war of afganistan without any visible evidence except that it shouldn't take 52 days to make a desicion on what should be done troop wise.

    2. I watched a keith olberman clip about the war on fox news. His main point throughout the news was fox lies. The talk show also seemed to make a point saying Bush did this to us so its ok if we do it to fox, not that were doing it. His guest made a comment of how rational viewers don't watch fox news. Olberman also said "fox is usually wrong, Malevolent but skilled." This clip probably wasn't fair to compare the two because it was attacking fox news, which is a topic that is very easy to be biased on.

    @Thai
    I noticed in the video on hannity that he liked to bash obama alot. He seemed quick to say how bad he was. Not that this is much different how the MSNBC treated bush during the second term.

    @Drew

    I read an article on fox's website and within the first paragraph it started talking about the poor decisions made by democrats. The argument was over climate change to better the environment. The fox news channel basically threw the idea out the window and listed the bad things about it such as taxes.

    The article I read from msnbc was obama and improving technology in the future for the US. The view shown by the news channel was basically bias towards obama, however, this shouldn't come as a surprise since it's known as being a more democratic news channel.

    1. I watched the O'Reilly Factor. He talked about how Time Magazine accuses Fox news of lying. O'Reilly talked about how there really hasn't been any new news lately so when Fox decided to attack the White House everyone had to jump on the band wagon and have an opinion. He talked about people comparing Obama to Nixon. He talked about the Time columnist, Mr. Klein, who criticized Fox. O'Reilly asked to talk to Mr.Klein but Time said he was unavailable. O'Reilly went on to call him a coward and scared for not talking to him. O'Reilly was bias toward anyone who had an opinion on Fox attacking the White House. He twisted Time's statement around, changing it from saying "Mr. Klein is unavailable." to him saying that Klein is just a scared coward who can't back up his statements. He tries to really make you believe that Fox wasn't lying about anything.

    2. I watched Olbermann. He discussed the ongoing war on fox. He said about how Obama's administration helped prove that Fox just makes stuff up. He talked about how Fox claimed they were excluded from a White House interview but the White House claimed they never asked to come to the interview, but they came anyways. He talked about how Miss Perino is "full of crap", comparing Obama to Chavez. He just attacked Fox news, calling them a bunch of liars who need to get their stories straight and will just keep lying from now on since their ratings have started to go up since this incident.

    From Fox, I read the transcript of a clip with Hannity regarding the war between the White House and Fox news. Basically, it entailed all the bias that one would expect. It was mostly Hannity talking about how the administration doesn't want anybody opposing them or asking them tough questions. He also criticizes the ineffectiveness of the administration and goes into detail about how slow they have been in getting things done. In general, I found Hannity to be substantially biased, but no more so than is to be expected from a prominent conservative Republican talking about issues regarding the liberal Democratic president

    From MSNBC, I read the transcript of one of Rachel Maddow's shows. The section I read pertained to the debate over Health Care reform. She spent almost the entire time describing Republicans' shortcomings and many failures in the debate. She described their efforts as "groundout, strike out, knock yourself out." She also criticized Fox news at several points.
    Though the liberal bias was fairly evident in this instance, I think it's generally harder to find liberal bias. But that, of course, is due to the present nature of the government. Everyone who says that conservatives are much more biased than liberals seems to forget that it's a lot easier to sound biased if you oppose the current government and their actions and policies.

    Just by the nature of the article, and its “going green” undertone (and subject matter) some bias is show immediately with the subject matter chosen to be written about and published on the website. The article talks about a visit Obama made to a Florida power plant and the money he’s putting towards new energy grids. As I read on, the article continued to make a “big deal” out of what Obama has put money towards, and it basically was mostly written about what WILL happen, not what HAS happened. (And yes, I’m looking at it from the other angle, just to show the bias that’s evident.) Continuing in the article it talked about all the plans that the money CAN be used for, etc. etc. etc. Bias was there. End of story.

I think that this article shows that everyone likes to bash Obama's plans just because they've never worked before with anybody else, which in a sense is true.

    2. For the second item, I read the article on MSNBC about Obama's first year in office. 1. The epiosode of the O'Reilly factor where Bill-o discusses the controversy surrounding a high school yearbook voting of class couple going to homosexual girls who were dating for quite some time. Bill perfectly displays his biased views on homosexuality as he repeatedly refers to their choice to date as "innapropriate" while refering to heterosexuality as the "norm" he refuses to state that these girls may be in love, or at least as much in love as you can be in high school. He just thinks it is a way of getting to adults, and making a rebellious act. He simply refused to look at in different perspectives.

    2. On the other hand, a hugely biased broadcast by msnbc would the piece on who else? bill o' reilly where Olbermann refers to him as the "sideshow bob" of journalism, repeatedly comitting acts of sheer "slap stick comedy" in the form of blatantly lying about topics that were later cited. 1. This fox news article was about how a TIME magazine columnist thinks Fox lies. Joe Klein is the one who claimed fox news lies. O' reilly is being biased by trying to twist Kleins words around to make them seem like they never do any wrong or lie. He states that just because there hasn't been much news lately, this is just to stir up the media.

    2. On todays show, Rachel talked about healthcare reform and public option. She also talks about a murder case and about George Bush's speech in Texas. I kind of took her transcript in as sarcastic. She also made a lot of points about conservatives in her transcript.

  33. @ grant: I agree on your points about the MSNBC and how its harder to pick out certain biased statements.

    @ Lamar : i agree about how fox is heavily opinionated. They tried to make Klein seem crazy just because he made statements about fox news lieing.

  34. 1. The article from Fox is on the insurance plan that’s trying to be passed. The article says that the plan will dominate the market, and make the rates of private plans go up, putting independent insurance companies in jeopardy. This article is biased as it mainly focuses on what the plan would do to private enterprise and how it would ruin it for private companies, and not what it was intended to do on the most basic of levels: provide everyone with insurance.

    2. This article from MSNBC is on the long-term health care program. The article talks about the benefits to senior citizens and middle class the voluntary program has, and how cost effective it is. The article seems biased only through the fact it only sings the program’s praises, though it does give other opinions on the program.

    … I’m not too great at picking out biases.

    1. I watched a Talking Point from the O'Reily Factor. It discussed the constant outbursts and radicalism of Democratic Congressman Alan Grayson. In one of his speeches he went as far as to call a lobbyist a whore! He is constantly bashing Republicans and their decisions. O'Reily is definintely a passionate Republican and made sure to show all the worst moments that Grayson caused. This definitely shows that the O'Reily Factor is a strong republican show.

    2. I watched Countdown with Keith Olbermann. This segment was based on the health care plan. It talked about how one Congressman that is a Democrat, Senator Lieberman, would vote with the Republicans if it came to a yes or no vote. The importance of this is that his vote would allow the Republicans to create a filibuster on the Bill. This report was definitely on the Liberal and Democratic side. They talked about Republicans poorly and showed definite support for the passing of the Bill

    @ Katelyn
    Yeah Fox seemed slightly more outspoken on its opposition of the other party

    @Grant
    I think Fox is alittle more outspoken but I can definitely tell where the bias is for MSNBC

    1. It appears as though most of us have noticed Fox news' ability to turn the words of Mr. Obama around in a negative light. Anything that the president says the network can manipulate to be shown in a negative light. This is specifically evident in regards to the current healthcare bill awaiting passage. With conservative folk saying that Obama wants to kill the elderly, there is not much convincing them that the man is Abraham Lincoln. However, Fox News does help to paint a picture of Obama as an essentially slightly darker Stalin.

    2. MSNBC does basically the exact same thing as Fox, only this network supports our president and paints seemingly all conservatives in a negative light. The network shows any republican attempting to question this bill as a capitalist pig intent on helping big corporations with a piece of hay in his or her mouth. MSNBC is basically the polar opposite of FOX NEWS.

    @ Tilley
    agreed.

    @ Lamar
    agreeded about fox.

    1. Well Seriously...If the whole Joe Klein thing doesnt show Bias, then i don't know what does. Fox isn't perfect. They're not "Fair and Balanced" like their logo says, they have their opinion and they express it. O'Reilly is trying to make Fox seem "Fair and Balanced" when any one with eyes, ears, or...well any sorta judgement at all can see that fox is anything but.

    2. The total opposite of Fox is MSNBC. Fox is extremely republican, while MSNBC is extremely Democratic. The artical i read was on the health care bill (boring). They mostly talked about how amazing Obama is, and how this bill is gonna change america. What about the flaws? That's what i wanna know...maybe i'll just go ask Fox. :)

    I watched a clip from the O'Reilly Factor. O'Reilly argued about evolution with an atheistic author and scientist. He was obviously bias to argue that religion should be taught as a possible answer to fill the missing gap that science has left out. It also seemed that they were making the scientist look crazy and did things like bluntly label him as "ATHEIST" under his name.

    I watched a Rachel Maddow interview with a Conservative/Christian author who gave his insight on how he feels about extreme conservatives comparing Obama to Hitler. He argued that conservatives are being ridiculous and just want to see Obama fail. He even criticized Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. I think they were slightly bias in having only one side of the story and it was kind of cheating bringing on a conservative that argued for the Democrats.

    @Robert
    I also found it more difficult to find bias in my msnbc interview compared to my Fox one.

    @Rachael
    I notice that Fox News often gets off topic of what's really important and almost always goes straight to focusing on the negative things about the Democrats.

    I read an article on the fox website about obama and healthcare reform. It would be foolish not to realize the conservative biases, from the author talking so bluntly about how he thinks the democrats are some fools in the government to implying that obama himself doesn't know a thing about healthcare. Those things might not be conservative ideals, but since they're attacking "liberals", i think they are conservative biases.

    I read an article on the msnbc about obama putting 3.4 billion dollars towards a "smart" power grid. I couldn't really pick out many biases in this or other ones, maybe because i have a biased opinion of what's biased. I kinda feel, though, that when people state facts without attacking democrats, they're called biased liberally. All the conservatives attack and attack, but the democrats don't really, and i think that's what a "liberal bias" really is.

    This article was a segment about all the major news organizations backing FOX news up against the White House. The news organizations believed that it was against freedom of the press when the White House only wanted certain organizations to participate in a news conference with a Czar. Even though these stations report on things differently, (i.e. conservatives vs. liberals) they all agree that the White House shouldn't interfer with the media. This is a perfect example of how the W.H. and Obama only want certain types of propaganda fed to the public.

    This video talks about a connecticut senator, Lieberman, who stated he would filibuster public opinion on the health reform bill. And the liberal newscaster, Rachel Maddow, was irate about this. Maddow also stated other times Lieberman stated one way but voted another.
