Polly want a cracker? Or perhaps a greater understanding of US Politics? This blog is dedicated to DHS AP US Government & Politics students. Remember, DHS cares!
I think we should spend tomorrow's period posting our blogs... just sayin
ReplyDelete1. Buses: the bus system here is so stupid. Just in my neighborhood (which isnt big at all) there are two buses that come and pick people up, when they easily could just be put on one. One of the buses that comes through also goes all the way out to Bull road too, which is inefficient, wasteful, and pointless.
ReplyDeleteThis money was spent to get the people that wouldnt fit in one bus in another that goes everywhere and picks up all the other kids from places where the bus was full. It would be more efficient to reorganize the bus system.
2. In addition, i personally think its pretty pointless to waste money on ID badges when nobody wheres them and nobody really checks them. I'm sure they werent too costly, but still, i dont think they are necessary at all and i dont think that is money that needed to be spent.
I guess this money was spent to "protect" our school, but its pointless.
3. Since i'm out of school examples, i googled wasteful spending and i found something that i'm sure lawmakers everywhere do but i never really thought about. Lawmakers travel all the time and the plane tickets are preordered, and sometimes the lawmaker ends up going on the trip. This is incredibly wasteful spending and could be solved by better planning techniques.
First off I must say how unfair it is that Amanda gets all of computer programming to post blogs and do author portfolios! And people say people in band have it easy! At least we do band stuff!
ReplyDelete1. I think the school spent too much money on technology. I personally never used the lab tops. Also, no one uses the smart boards!! Yes, Wagmen graphs on it, but that’s about it. Mr. Hoover gives notes but it would be just as easy to copy them in another manner. I assume this was suppose to improve learning strategies, sadly however we need to spend more time learning to use the new equipment.
2. I agree with Amanda and the bus situation. On my bus alone there is like 10 students. And I know there are multiple buses that pass the same area. Ok, Ok, it’s more convenient for the students but we can’t afford it!
3. I think street lights are a waste of money. Yes, it may keep criminals of the streets but don’t you think they would just use the back alley’s without lights anyways.
Ok so I went on heritage.org to find examples of government waste that I thought was interesting:
ReplyDelete1. Apparently the government hands out credit cards to people in the army and or navy and they can charge stuff on it like concerts, gambling, cruises, and what I like to call the "exotics" (prostitutes and strip joints). All of which are added to the governments huge deficit.
I guess they were hoping that members would spend wisely but when people get "free money" they do it carelessly.
2. They spend a lot of money on grants like the rock and roll Hall of fame and to stop the spread of "goth" kids in Blue Springs, Missouri.
I'm not exactly sure why money was spent here but I do know that goth kids are scary.
3. The government also pays for the scientists giant experiments such as the superconducting super collider which basically re- creates the big bang on a smaller scale. We already know it happened i don't see why we need to know in every little detail what happened.
I'm not really sure if the big bang is supposed to happen again to us, but if the scientist could find a way for humanity to survive it then it would prove useful. Nevermind it was never completed.

ReplyDelete1. Like Amanda and Brent both said, busing systyems are very wasteful. In our district alone there are over laping bus runs and buses that are very empty. Also, being on the "trackless track team" this year, I know we used an extra bus every week of the season to go to Northeastern for a practice. Our busing, and other local districts, spending has to be high, there should be a more convient and cheaper way to bus. For example, with our track team the money had to be spent for busing so that we could get practices in at an actaul track. Now, not only do we need the money for a new track, but extra spending went into busing the track team around York county. Not very well thought out plans, cause wasteful busing systems.
ReplyDelete2. The new technologies, like lap tops and smart boards, that we have in our district wouldn't be wasteful if we actually would use them. But, on top of all the new systems we are still using the same amount of paper. It's so wasteful to have the new technology, and put the money into it, and not have full usage, while still going through tons of paper. The easiest way to fix this wasteful act would be to take time to fully learn how to use the euipment and then enforce usage. Which, would allow us to gradually lessen our paper usage in schools. This computer vs paper issue applies in all types of governmentaly businesses and businesses, especailly medical. This problem is occuring, because time is calling for technological advancements, but going from paper to computers is a long transtional process, which includes a wasteful period.
3. I couldn't find any specific wasteful spendings that someone hadn't already used, but I did read an article talking about why our local government has such money spending issues. Our government believes that our spending can increase, as long as our tax revenues are incresed; making up for the differences in the end. Meaning they spend the money before they actually have it. We can't rely on money we don't have. Therefore most of our spending is consider "wasteful," because to begin with we don't actually have the money. The government needs to not only cut back on spending, but they also need to make wiser spending decisons.
1. In our school, i think the promethian boards could have worked if everyone uses them. Some teachers like hoover n miller use them for notes and such which is good but ive been in classes where they arent used at all! and also the machines in our lobby..these machines arent even on during the day i dont believe so whats the point of them being there!
ReplyDelete2. I know the other year we got our gym painted which no one really even noticed or cared! i think the money should have been used for another sport equiptment as an example turf for our football field or definitely a new track. the track is used by many gym classes as well as most of our outdoor sports! the school shouldnt have let our track become quarintened!
3.There is this one project i found..Russell Street reconstruction. Its where in this one town they ripped apart the road to create a center lane when they could have just drawn differnet lines. This caused alot of people with an inconvience! instead of just drawing new lines they had to destroy the whole road and add more granite to the road.
1. Alright man i had to work tonight didnt get home til 10 and have tons of hw so this isnt going to be good. But in the school wasteful spending is definitely on the band program and i dont care if i piss people off. The band gets so much money and yet theyre not as good as they once were. Band kids get to go to there sweet little hangout that cost a good chunk of the 2000 whenever renovation and do nothing and get 100s for it.
ReplyDelete2. Speaking of the the renovation it sucked. Dover doesnt know how to organize and budget there money and our school is crap because of it. We have wasted so much money trying to "improve" the school when it would be more productive and probably in the long run cost-efficient to bulldoze it and bulid another one.
3. And in government i read that $30 million in state funding went to build PNC a new complex. This kind of state money shouldnt be spent on companies and such when they can pay for it themselves.
4. Lastly id like to disagree with the technology comments. I think they're a great investment when teachers use them. When teachers are just ignorant and refuse to accept any of the change thats when it becomes wasteful but otherwise the technology is very helpful.
1. I'm kinda in the same situation as Dakota. I think the school wastes money on the football team. Other sports teams are pushed aside and our football team isn't good anyway so why waste so much money on it? I'm definitely for the new track and field though because other teams can utilize it as well.
ReplyDelete2. I also think that renovations for our school are rather pointless and wasteful. It would be more beneficial if we could just have a brand new school. It would make everyone happy.
3. For local government wasteful spending I chose the water meter project at the Dover Borrough. Water meters were replaced and there were many issues with the new ones so I think it was a waste of time. However the Borrough had the people's best interest in mind to make sure broken meters weren't giving inaccurate readings. Therefore residents were paying the appropriate bill amount and weren't charged more by accident.

ReplyDelete1. One example of wasteful spending in the state is the money we spend building new highways and roads when we should be maintaining the already existing highways. We spend all of our money on building new highways, expanding them and making them bigger. While this may control the flow of traffic slightly, it's not really worth it. The costs of building these new road systems is extremely wasteful because the roads we already have really are working fine. We should be spending the money on the maintenance of these roads so make sure that they last, rather than just building new ones.
2. An example of wasteful spending within our schools is overspending on sports teams. A lot of our sports teams get a ton of stuff they don’t really need… like team apparel, warm-ups, new uniforms, new equipment, medals and trophies, etc. I agree that sometimes it’s necessary to get new uniforms and stuff, but there are some sports that get new uniforms every year. I don’t know about Dover, but my friend from another school said their cheerleading squad gets new uniforms every single year. And each girl’s uniform is specially fitted for their body, and they can even get alterations. Every year. I think that’s ridiculous and totally unnecessary. Especially when other sports teams are going on 15 years with the same uniforms. I don’t know how long it’s been since the soccer team or the track team has gotten new ones, but compared to cheerleading it’s long overdue.
3. Another example of wasteful spending in schools is all our new technology…we don’t even use half of it. I know a handful of teachers that use their SmartBoards maybe once a month, either because they are against it or they simply don’t know how to use it. That’s a lottt of money going to waste, as that SmartBoard sits in the classroom gathering dust. Okay, it does have a lot of cool features and stuff, but essentially it’s a glorified chalk board. We’ve made it in the past without them, so we don’t REALLY need them now. Also, I don’t see the point in having that lap-top cart that the librarians wheel around. We have like four computer labs at our school, but we still feel the need to buy a bunch of lap-tops to keep track of. They really aren’t THAT essential.
1. Well, I think that the school waists a lot of money on things we really don't need. Like other people said a lot of teachers who have the smart boards don't use them. Some teachers still have problems with them and don't know what they are doing. I think they waisted a lot of money on it. They should have asked teachers if they would use them before they bought all of them. Nothing was wrong with using white boards and chalk boards. Math it is usful cause you can graph things easier.I think that they spent all this money cause they felt it would help schools.
ReplyDelete2. I also think that we waist a lot of money in the cafe, and trash. Will all the trays and plastic ware we use i think it would be cheaper to just buy metal forks and spoons and plastic trays that we could reuse and wash. It's better for the enviornment and i think that it would help save money. Reusing them every year would probably be cheaper than buying thousands of trays and forks and spoons each year. Its not just waistful spending but its hurting the enviornment too.
3. The government i think waists a lot of money. I think I found the sane web site as Dakota did. Along with the 30 million in state funding to help PNC bank there is also, in Pittsburgh, 5.4 billion being spent on agricultural shows and fairs, and 2.7 million for the milk Marketing Board. All of these are things that taxpayers money goes to. They can be supported some other way.
