Bureaucracy

Research the new Obama plan for Education:
1. Summarize the plan & compare it to NCLB
2. Assess the plan--is it realistic & do you support it? What are the pros and cons?
3. YOU are now Secretary of Education...what would your focus be? What are the big problems you see and how would you address them?

  1. 1. His plan is to hire new teachers and develop ways to reward teachers who are doing a good job teaching. Instead of punishing schools that are "left behind", the gov't wants to help get them to where they need to be. They also want to make higher education more affordable by expansion of Pell Grants and starting new tax credits so students can afford college. They also want to begin Head Start programs to make sure kids are ready for kindergarten.
    2. At first glance, it seems as though it work but the cost of these new reforms will be massive. There has to be an overwhelming number of schools that need support of the government to reach the standards set. I also forsee many parents who will need support to enroll their children in these Head Start programs. However education is important so if this idea is guaranteed any progress, I believe it's worth a shot.
    3. I believe that the gov't should try to help students who are serious about school and want to enroll in college or other forms of high education. I feel this is where many americans experience problems especially with payments. I would try to make sure that almost every college has ssome kind of payment aid program so students can reach their career goals.

  2. 1.Obama’s new plan for education includes hiring new teachers. It also includes helping schools instead of punishing them for not living up to “no child left behind.” The plan also attempts to make higher education more affordable by expanding Pell Grants and creating tax cuts. Also, children will be better prepared for kindergarten by expanding the “head start” program. This program is different from No Child Left Behind because it strives to help schools whose students arent performing as opposed to punishing the schools and allowing students to transfer.

2.I think the plan sounds good but the cost will be massive, as Rhea mentioned. I don’t think that we can afford all these programs and hiring new teachers because of the massive deficit. I think that this plan could either go really well or really bad, but it all depends on how it is carried out.

    3. I don’t know if its just because I’m almost at this point in my life or not but my main focus would be making college more affordable. The price of an education these days is absolutely ridiculous. As the Secretary of Education I would push for more tax breaks for college students and definitely more scholarships available that arent necessarily based on need. I think all colleges should have decent financial aid programs that make college affordable for anyone who truly wants a college education.

  3. 1. His new plan is to get a whole bunch of new teachers and give teachers rewards who are doing a awesome job. He is going to change NCLB so that they are supporting the schools are bad and need help rather than punishing them. He also wants to make college less expensive by expanding Pell Grants (whatever that is) and making new tax credits so its better. He also wants to prepare kids for kindergarden better and do more with early education by expanding Head Start.
    2. I think the plan sounds good. I think making college cheaper is a great idea. I support his plans. I think that it is pretty realistic. Some pros are making college cheaper, getting more teachers, and helping schools rather than punishing them. The cons are if there are more teachers then shcool has to pay more teachers which most don't want to do.
    3. I guess I would want to focus on making shcool more afordable for kids. I think that it cost too much for school, and that can push kids away from going. The other big thing I think we should work on is preparing our kids at a younger age like the kindergarden thing he wants to improve. When your younger its easier to learn things so things like other languages should be taught at a younger age.
    4. Is this a long enough post or should i have wrote more????

  6. 1. First off I'd like to say I like the new layout for this page lol. Anyway, Obama plans to hire new teachers and help schools that didn't get anywhere with the NCLB. He wants to use alternative preparation and professional development programs to accomodate high-need schools. He believes that the goals for the NCLB were right, but the way they were implemented wasn't successful. Obama isn't in favor of standardized tests and he wants to make math and science a higher priority. Obama wants to have a merit pay system to reward great teachers which would be based on a teacher's service to mentor new teachers, take extra responsibilites, learn new skills to teach, or consistently excel. He also plans to make college more affordable through his American Opportunity Tax Credit. The credit will insure that the first $4,000 of a college education is free for most Americans. He plans to prep children for kindergarten with a Head Start program. Obama also doesn't support vouchers from public schools that parents would use to pay private schools.
    2. I think his plan is mostly realistic. I think it will be difficult to finance all these ideas. If Obama would remove the vouchers it would be a con because parents feel they shouldnt pay a school taxes if they send their kid to a private school. They feel like it would be more fair if they had the voucher. Schools would also be at a disadvantage if they have to hire more teachers and can't afford to pay them. The pros are hiring new teachers and rewarding good ones. Helping younger children be prepared for school. Offering programs for those with higher needs. Making college more affordable is a big plus in my opinion.
    3. If I was the Secretary of Education I would focus on making college more affordable, providing programs for those with higher needs, preparing pre-schoolers for kindergarten, and prioritizing math and science curriculum. The biggest problem I would see is finding the money to pay for all of this. The people who will receive the benefits will probably have to pay for this and I'm sure they won't be happy about it.

  7. 1. There are 3 parts to Obamas plan. He wants to improve k-12 schooling by hiring a bunch of teachers, reward teachers who do well, and improve schools that are doing bad instead of punish them. Second he wants to make sure college and other post-graduate options are more available to kids by creating more scholarships and making new tax credits. And the last part is investing in early childhood education so that kids are coming into kindergarten more prepared. I dont know much about nclb and i tried looking for stuff but this new plan doesnt sound like its changing it just improving it.

    2. I do think this is a realistic plan and i support it because i've often heard that people respond better to rewards than punishment and i know that a lot of people worry about paying for college and everything. The whole kindergaten thing i dont get because you dont even learn that much in kindergarten to begin with so what do they need to learn beforehand? But whatever. One of the cons though is the rewards system. For example you Mr. Hoover who have smart kids to begin with having an AP class their grades may not "improve" all that much and so they might say oh we dont have to reward him. But say someone like Mr. Taylor who has all academic classes could give his kids really easy tests and work and their grades could sky rocket and he gets rewarded. I think its going to be hard to judge who actually does a good job and who doesnt.

    3. To be honest the big problem i see is apathy. I dont think kids are getting dumber, actually the contrary, I just think that students today just dont care about school. I dont think we do enough to get kids involved and excited about school. I think getting kids to have school pride and take their education seriously we would have no problem with grades. I myself have pretty much given up on going above and beyond. I do just enough to get me by and pretty hate everything about school except for the social aspect. This mainly started in high school too so i think this says something about that too but i dont know thats just what i would focus on getting kids to be spirited and prideful of school by doing much more class activities about school especially throughout their schooling career so that they get it instilled in them. Just my thoughts.

    4. And shut up courtney you know you were putting short answers just to get it done, actually just proving my point about apathy in school. Oh and i just thought of something i would do, competition. I know when my friends are in my class and we compete for a better grade it makes me wanna do better but its fun because i love competition. just sayin. holla atcha guala.

  8. I don't alwasys put short answers. Mine weren't even that much shorter than everyone elses. You just said you do enough to get by so am i not allowed to do that too? oh wait your a god so its okay for you to do whatever you want. lol :)

  9. ok ... first of all looks like we got a little fight going on above me lol kinda funny i would like to see what they would really be saying if they knew hoover wouldnt read this lol ... ok ok
    1. he wants to change testing methods, give more money to public schools so that we stop loosing money to private schools, and fix no child left behind. he says that NCLB has a good goal but isnt being persude correctly. he wants to provide funding to 200 new teaching residency programs so that there are more teachers and apprentices in schools.
    2. ok so i think the plan could work but will be alot of money. and i think that if we try to do this it wont work we need that money for other things ... like the war we have been in for the past what 11 years!!! i think that right now is no the right time to do this but i would like to see something like this get done in the future
3.i think kids dont give a crap about school .. i no i dont to be honest. i wake up hating it and i go to bed saying ugh im not doing my homework i dont even care. i think there is to much stress going on between high school work sports getting ready for college or the real work and just trying to be a kid. its way to much. i think something should be dont about that. i dont know what exactly but they should think of something. they are killing us or at least most of us

  10. 1.Obama wants to hire new teachers and the schools that are doing a good job he wants to reward them. with the no chil left behind law he says it was a good law but it wasnt applied sucessfully. He is startin the head start program where it gets kids ready for kindergarten.

2.i think really this could go both ways. it could be really great and help us alot or it will cost all of money that we dont have.

3.I agree with levi soo much. Ppl say when u go into high school its the time of ur life and you are suppose to have so much fun..well then why are we so pressured to make the deicsion of wat we want to do with the rest of our lives when were 16 years old. and were so busy with school, sports, working, deciding where we want to go to college, wat we want to do, its so stressful that we end up saying screw it when we get home from all out activites to even focus on schoolwork when we get home. if i was the secrety of education i would love to focus on perserving kids high school experience and not putting so much pressure on them.

  11. Hydeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    1. Obama is reforming a number of pressing education issues. He is addressing these issues objectively. For standardized testing, he is going to provide funds for states to implement a broader range of assessments, hopefully to improve students' abilities to use technology, conduct research, engage in scientific investigation, solve problems, and present and defend their ideas. Obama doesn't support the vouchers that allow parents to use public school money to send their kid to private school; he wants to strengthen the public schools. He wants to attract, support and retain high-quality teachers. To do this, he's providing funding for 200 new Teacher Residency Programs. He is also going to make college more affordable by ensuring that "the first $4,000 of a college education is completely free for most Americans." He is alsoooo going to provide funding for a universal preschool, and make improvements to science, math, and technology education.

    2. I think Obama is putting a lot on his plate! He's proposing a lot of new ideas and reforms to the education policy and, while attainable, it may be hard to accomplish everything as fast as he would like to. These things take a lot of time, and I think he's being very ambitious. He keeps saying he will provide funding for all these new ideas but I'm just wondering where he's gonna get all the money from? He may have bitten off more than he can chew, but we'll see if he pulls through. They all seem like pretty good ideas, so I support it.

    3. I agree with Dakota on this one... there's a lot of apathy in high school when it comes to getting involved and actually striving for success. I'm actually writing a paper on this for the Student Forum, but pertaining to apathy in Student Council involvement rather than the high school learning process. Most kids just do the bare minimum to get by and the only thing bringing them to school is the social aspect. I really can't come up with a quick fix for this, but I think that over time, with work we could get the level of involvement up. We need more teachers like Mr. Hoover, who took the lame Eagle Card assemblies and turned it into something interesting and fun, while still getting to the point of it. We'd just need to take that idea and apply it to the classroom. It seems like Obama is actually gonna try to do this when he says he wants to limit the amount of fill-in-the-bubble tests and support more hands-on learning activities. We just need to somehow get people more excited to learn, I guess.

  12. 1. Obama’s new education plan includes hiring new teachers and awarding good schools and teachers instead of punishing schools that do not live up to no child left behind. The plan will also attempt to expand Pell Grants and cut taxes to make higher education more affordable and create a head start program to prepare kids for kindergarten.
    2. The plan definitely seems better than no child left behind. The support for better schooling is miles better than punishment. However, I don’t see where we are going to get money to expand Pell Grants if we cut school taxes.
    3. Supporting students and schools that perform well is good and all, but I wouldn’t let the lower performance schools just fall apart. College prices are high; however they may be necessary to enforce some of the goals stated in number 1.

  13. Sorry it was late, but I was enjoying a relaxing Easter 8)

1.Obama’s new plan for education includes hiring new teachers, helping schools instead of punishing them for not meeting all the “no child left behind” criteria, it attempts to make higher education more affordable, and uses the "head start” program, whcih will allow children to be better ready for kindergarten.
2.The plan seems to be a good one, but the cost on the other hand will be massive. I think that if it can be done, especially expense wise, then we should go for it. Education is very important. I think it is good that Obama is stressing over a good plan like this one, that will better America and its "to be's." He may be promising a plan, but the worst that can happen is it fail, and education will just stay the same.
    3. I would definately strees the "head start" program. You are able to learn and grasp new concepts better. I think the sooner you learn the easier. Also, making college more affordable. It is so expensive and intimidating. Being 17, and having to choose a college and then figure out how to pay for the expenses, makes you dread the whole process more. I personally have no idea how you would go about it, and apparently governement officals don't either. They are stressing the importance of an education more and more, and kids are hating it more and more.
