All Sorts of Things.....
It was Earth Day this week. Research EDay and explain its significance. Do you support all the Earth Day hoopla? Does DHS do enough for the environment? What are the York areas greatest environmental problems? Applying the problem transformation model, do you see environmental issues becoming new policy? If so--what policies? If not, what do environmental issues lack that is needed for tranformation?

1. I got this one from Wikipedia. Well Earth day was created in 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. It basically says that 20 million ppl were in the first Earth day celebration thinger, while today 500 million ppl are. Its significance is that well it brought together a lot of people who never would have realized they have something in common with each other. Also it raises awareness of the Earth and our enviornment and what we should do to keep it clean. It helps people to realize about the earth and if they maybe do it one day they wil continue to do it they rest of the year too. Yeah i looked on other sites too i can't really find a huge significance other than that.
ReplyDelete2. I guess I support Earth Day I mean its great that on that day ppl do extra stuff help out but really they should be doing that all year long. Yeah if they do it one day they might do it the rest but its not likely. I support keeping our Earch clean and all that. I just think ppl should try to do it every day not just one day or week out of a year.
3. DHS most def. does not do enough for the enviornment. First off they give us styrofoam trays at lunch which is really bad for the enviornment. Then in the bath rooms we use paper towels when using a blow dryer thing they have at the movies would be much better to use than all of those paper towels kids use a day that get thrown out. Idk if they really do recycle or not if we do thats good. I know some kids say they really dont. So idk about that one. But yeah Dover sucks with that and so do most other schools too. Oh yeah and NHS does Adopt a HighWay. I think it would be better if everyone had to do one for part of their community servie things rather than whatever else they do.
4. Well i couldn't really find anything bad. On this web site. http://www.epa.gov/greenkit/york.htm. It said York was the first to join the Green Community group thing, its like this program that helps local communitys taking charge of their own enviornmental issues. We got to be the first group nominated cause we want to save 100 acres of rail corridor property, and to create 3,000 more jobs. I thought it was interesting that it said we were at 19.8% for poverty level which is approching the critical level.
5. I don't really see enviornmental issues becomoing a new policy. I think that people will think of other things first over the enviornment. Enviornmental issues lack peoples support a lot of people don't care about the enviornment, and think that money and other things are more inportant. I think they only way to get lots of people to care about the environment would be if the world was gonna like explode or something horrible would happen. Right now i think ppl don't care or think global warming isn't real, so i think somehthing big would have to happen for people to care.
The idea of Earth Day came to Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1962. Over a period of seven years it developed into the actual holiday. Earth Day officially started in 1970. Nelson wanted this day created because he was sick of the environment not being an issue in politics. Earth Day happens on April 22nd of every year and helps to urge people to care about the environment and do things that help the earth. (http://earthday.envirolink.org/history.html)
ReplyDeleteI support Earth Day. I don’t consider myself a braid-wearing, flower-headband, bell-bottom wearing hippie, but I do think the environment is a very important issue that needs to be addressed. I think that its good that at least one day a year people are urged to care about nature and maybe even clean the earth up a little, like the DHS teachers did on Thursday. Overall, I don’t think DHS does anything for the environment, so while I was waiting to pull out on 74 Thursday, I was pleasantly surprised to see the teachers volunteering to help clean up the fields.
Environmental contamination is a problem in York. One of the main issues of contamination is water fluoridation in York. There are possible health related problems involving fluoridation and the issue has been voted on and approved, but then re-voted on and shot down many times. (http://www.actionpa.org/fluoride/)
I actually do think more environmental policies and regulations coming into affect. I’m not sure what policies because I’m not well-versed in environmental issues but I think that there are enough interest groups-- like the EPA and enough citizens that care to get more policies through the transformation model to get things passed. There probably will be more regulations in the near future cutting emissions and there may even be more tax credits for buying energy efficient appliances.
This was from www.earthday.net.
ReplyDeleteThe movement started in 1970 as we all know and it was founded by wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. Denis Hayes was a National Coordinator who organized rallies where a bunch of hippies as well as others helped clean up the country. This movement led to the EPA and the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Act. This wasn't from the site but on Earth day I was watching the news and they said that it became the last straw when (I think) the Ohio river caught fire from all the pollution in it.
Well in short heck no!!!! DHS does virtually nothing. I'm pretty sure we don't even recycle... except for that group Mean Green Super Heroes and i'm not even sure if that group still exists. Tho only other thing is that NHS requires that we do 2 Adopt-A-Highways.
York is an idustrial area so I would assume that air pollution would be a problem to the enviornment. Plus when was the last time you've seen a bunch of people ride bikes that weren't little kids. Um I think we are also running out of places to throw our trash as our dumps are approaching full...to bursting! The salt from the snowy season or the fertilizer I wouldn't think would be too good for the water when it all gets washed there...Drink Up!
At this point until it gets to the point where everyone just can't take it anymore, I don't think it will be a policy. Then we would have to come up with solutions which I don't think anyone has at this point. They could probably make it a law that everyone has to recycle but it would be hard to enforce. Unless they hire people to stand at garbage cans and check which would create more jobs, but I'm pretty sure that violates some privacy law...It's all really complicated. :(
1. In 1963, former Senator Gaylord Nelson began to worry about our planet.Senator Nelson knew that our world was getting dirty and that many of our plants and animals were dying. He wondered why more people weren't trying to solve these problems. He talked to other lawmakers and to the President. They decided that the President would go around the country and tell people about these concerns. He did, but still not enough people were working on the problem.
ReplyDeleteThen, in 1969, Senator Nelson had another idea. He decided to have a special day to teach everyone about the things that needed changing in our environment. He wrote letters to all of the colleges and put a special article in Scholastic Magazine to tell them about the special day he had planned. (Most of the schools got this magazine and he knew that kids would help him.)On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. People all over the country made promises to help the environment. Everyone got involved and since then, Earth Day has spread all over the planet. People all over the world know that there are problems we need to work on and this is our special day to look at the planet and see what needs changing.
2. I suuport Earth Day. I think that people need to keep the enviroment in mind more than just once a year though. Earth Day rasies awareness, but in order to see a difference it has to be done daily. My contribution to the enviroment is I recycle, don't liter, and and turn off lights and water when not in use on a daily basis.
3. I don't think DHS does enough for the enviroment. Like Courtney mentioned about the paper towels, hand dryers would be enviromentally smarter. Also, the styrofoam trays and plastic untensils used daily. Not to mention the amount of paper used not only in the high school, but throughout the whole district. On a plus side though, a requirement for NHS is doing two Adopt-A- Highways, there was one the day before Earth Day that I and many others participated in. We collecct trash along 74, from the square to Save Smart.
4. York County was the first to join the Green Community group, which raises local enviromental awareness and works to save acres of land and will create a few thousand jobs. Definately a postive thing for the economy still being on the edge. Also, I too read about the water flouridation. It can cause many health related issues, including tooth decay; definately a concern.
5. I don't think anymore polices will be put in effect, nor do I think there should be anymore either. At this point it is up to citizens to just recycle and and be enviromentally aware. You can only try to make people care so much, and then you just have to move on to other issues.
1. Earth day is maent to make people more aware of the happenings of the environment and to appreciate our world.
ReplyDelete2. No i dont support the hoopla because i feel people dont even care about it. I think people should support and should participate but they dont. I dont think we need just one day to remind us of the importance of the earth i think we should have things all the time. People are ingnorant though so we wont.
3. No i dont think DHS does anything really. They plant a few bush's around the school, awsome. We use disposable everything and we dont enforce using the recycling bins. We have them but no one uses them. DHS also has no programs, besides environment and ecology, to try and teach people about the earth and how to help it.
4. According to Mr. Taylor and hes not sure either but some environmental problems we have are agriculture run off into the susquy, overpopulated deer, air pollution from the surrounding factories, and global warming.
5. No i dont think they'll become major issues. Considering theyve been around for decades and theyve never been important i dont think thats going to change anytime soon. I dont think it lacks anything i think people lack the intelligence and information to make it an issue. Call me a cynic but thats my opinion.

ReplyDeleteThe founder of Earth Day was Senator Gaylord Nelson. His idea was to persuade President Kennedy to go on a national consevation tour to show the people how much they needed to be concerned about the environment. This was in 1963 when they started the tour. but it wasnt as much as a success as they hoped. This turned into Earth day.
i dont go out of my way to celebrate Earth Day but if someone was like hey lets go plant a tree for Earth Day i would do it! and i dont hate on the people that are like omg i <3 Earth Day.
Im not really sure what DHS does for the enviroment besides like NHS doing adopt a highway and volunteering and stuff..i know in Dover students for a better dover we talked about cleaning up the gardens are DHS but nothing was ever done about it. I think we prolly could do more but kids are too lazy!
Idk if this is the right stuff u wanted but this onewebsite..http://articles.directorym.com/E_Waste_Mistakes_York_PA-r1132238-York_PA.html..had lists of companies in york county that i guess were environmental unfriendly!
The one says we need to be bigger on recycling!
It prolly wont become a new policy but it should. ppeole should care more about the environment but they are so wrapped up in their own activites and their own lives, usually the enviroment comes last in wat they are worrying about!
earth day ... raise awarness on the enviornment and stuff. it was started by the lord of the gays himself hahaha mr nelson in the 70s.
ReplyDeletei think that no one really cares about the day. ok so a couple classes go out and pick up some trash .. its like if u really cared about it u would do something more then just one day out of the year.
DHS dont do nothing ... like the other day on earth day ... what did we do ... nothing mr matt musser had a trash pick up thing .. thats not even part of DHS ... we only have like mr D.s wildlife class and mr taylor preaches about it
As for the problems around here .. all i got is polotion in the conewago to many deer .. and thats really all i got .. sorry
and i dont think they will have a policy for it ... there are bigger things ppl care about and untill people start caring more nothing will really get done
1. Earth Day is observed on April 22nd. It was established to raise awareness for the environment and inspire appreciation of the Earth. This day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, but the idea developed over a few years. This day is significant because people focus on environmental problems that need to be fixed.
ReplyDelete2. I support Earth Day. I think it's a good idea to look at environmental issues. Keeping the Earth clean is important, but personally it isn't that big of a deal to me. I don't think that DHS does enough for the environment. The only main activity that I can think of is the Adopt-A-Highway community service requirement. I'm sure there are more ways Dover could contribute to helping the environment. One example would be recycling lunch trays.
3. Well I found an article about water flouridation causing problems in York. I also read about the Brunner Island power plant in Northern York County (http://www.pplweb.com/ppl+generation/ppl+brunner+island.htm). Sulfur dioxide was emitted from the coal-powered plant. Now they have scrubbers that purify exhaust. They also built cooling towers to help reduce water temperature and protect aquatic life in the Susquehanna.
4. I don't think there will be many new environmental policies created. If so, it's unlikely that a large-scale policy will go into effect. I'm not sure what new policies could be created though. I think that transformation doesn't take place because people are apathetic or too busy with issues of higher priority.

ReplyDelete1. (http://www.epa.gov/earthday/share.html)
In the spring of 1970, Earth Day was established by Senator Gaylord Nelson to bring national recognition to the issue of pollution. It is significant because before 1970, there were no laws or anything against the amount of pollution being emitted into our environment. After the creation of Earth Day in April, the EPA was created in December of 1970. It is also important because most people don’t see environmental protection as a prominent issue in their lives, so Earth Day is supposed to reach out to those people and bring environmentalism up in their priorities.
2. I do support Earth Day…it’s kind of hard to be opposed to helping the environment. I think it’s a really good cause and has probably helped the EPA a lot by raising awareness. I do agree with Dakota though in that people should care every day and not just on Earth Day…but people are extremely ignorant so designating one day to the environment is really the only way to raise awareness.
3. I don’t really know the details of what DHS does for the environment…I think we recycle? But I heard that they just put the recycling in with the regular trash anyway because recycling isn’t regulated in the Dover Borough. I remember planting flowers and stuff when I was in elementary school, but that’s not a lot. I think most of what we do is a waste…like all the paper we use and our immense amount of bus transportation. I’m not saying these things aren’t necessary, but there may be some reforms we could make to help out the environment. The only really good thing I can think of is the Adopt-a-Highway program we do in NHS.
4. (http://www.yorkcity.org/section.php?name=Departments&pa=showpage&pid=124)
The environmental problems in York are mostly health hazards that pose a threat to public health. They are as follows: “poverty, inadequate housing, limited education, illiteracy, unemployment, and limited access to environmental control information.” All of those require environmental monitoring. York works hard to provide mandated actions like Water Pollution Control, Food Service Sanitation, and Solid Waste Management. There is also a number to call with any environmental complaints like trash buildup, old tires, infestation problems, etc.
5. Honestly, I don’t see environmental issues becoming a new policy anytime soon. Even though there has been a lot of attentiveness to the environment recently, it’s not enough to have a nation-wide effect. We can do little things to raise awareness, but to establish a policy would be hard. It would be great if a policy could be made, but too many people are apathetic about the environment and probably wouldn’t even follow it. That’s what environmental issues are lacking, people who care. It will be awhile until we actually realize what a healthy environment can do for us and how badly we are hurting it with our pollution. I think it just needs more awareness, and Earth Day is definitely a step in the right direction.
